Rodgers, Hammerstein and Logan's musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "Tales of the South Pacific," by James A. Michener. Odious racial prejudice is explored via romances between an American nurse struggling to accept a French plantation owner's mixed race children and a US lieutenant rearing social consequences should he marry his Tonkinese Island girl. Premiering on Broadway in 1949, the anti-racist message is still relevant 68 years later.
